There are many things here that, to the American mind, one would consider absurd, but to the S. Asian mind it makes perfect sense. Absurdity #1 is how to lock my front door. There is a latch lock on the inside and a pretty massive padlock that you use to lock the outside. Because of this particular locking technique, someone is always locked in or out of the house. If we do not all go out together somewhere, we have to call one of the roommates down in order to lock the door behind us. Also, with this locking style, everyone knows if you are home or away. Padlock on front door, you are not home. All the neighborhood children know we are home and we hear little knocks and the doorbell...in which you have to answer because there is no padlock on the door. At least they are cute.
