Glorious

Morgan, Bernard, our friend Abhi, and myself went up to a little hill station about 4 hours from where we live. We kind of felt like we were going through Jurassic Park, because the scenery was like a rain forest.  We took a boat ride, hiked to the top of a hill, and rode through the mountains. It was great to see so much green...we don't get to see that much in our city.  It was really amazing.

There is an area of town where we have been frequenting
and now have some new friends here.  We really enjoying visiting
and sharing with them. I love this picture of Dolly and her son.
Also, Morgan and I went with some friends for some special snacks. There are definitely some interesting flavors.  This one is called seiv puri.

My roommate and I decided that since there are so many interesting sights where we live, that we'll start posting a photo of the day.  I'm a little behind already, but here's mine from yesterday:

My very dear friend has come to visit me and I'm super excited and blessed to be able to have her here for almost 3 week!  Yesterday, we went to a friend's house and they put mehandi on us.

Faith

I have a painting in my room that my friend saw and wanted one, so I painted her this the other night. I had painted the original as a reminder of several things...
One such thing is God's faithfulness.  In the story of Noah and the flood, Noah sends out a dove to see if the waters have subsided.  The first time, the dove returns because there was no place for it to land.  The second time, the dove returns with a branch, and the the third time, the dove doesn't return, so Noah knew that the waters had receded.  God always does what He says He's going to do.  He said the flood would come, but God also said that He would protect and provide for Noah and his family.  Though we may go through trials or storms, good days and bad days, or uncertain times, God is always faithful to see us through it.  We just have to trust in Him and in his perfect timing.

When I was visiting a temple the other day, I shot this photo. When people enter the temple, they ring this bell to wake the gods and get their attention.  Upon seeing this, I recalled what the psalmist says in chapter 121:

"I will lift my eyes to the mountains; from where shall my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. He shall not allow your foot to slip; He who keeps you will not slumber.  He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep."

So often people say "they're all the same" or "they're all one" but my God doesn't need to be awakened and He is always available.  I don't have to ring a bell to get His attention, I just have to say His name.

Perspectives on the Cross

My good friend, Bernard, is directing a play here and we're all super excited about it.  It's called Perspectives on the Cross and will be first performed at a renowned theater in the city.  We're also hoping that it can be performed at the Gandhi Ashram.  It's a cast of eleven people, including Bernard and my roommate, Anna.  I took head shots and some group photos the other day.  They're a good looking group!

Holi

This past Sunday and Monday was Holi, the festival of Colors. On Monday, people were  throwing/spraying/pouring colors on each other.  I made it through the day, with even wearing a white shirt, without having much damage.

Family

So here are some of the photos from when my family was here!  What a fun time we had!  We went to the Golden Temple in Amritsar, where it was super cold, and the Taj Mahal.  Then Mom and Dad came to my city for a few days.  It was really nice to have them here.

Dance Party

Both, Bernard and Anna had/have birthdays this month, so we had a combined dance birthday party.  It was quite an evening.  Six of us prepared a special dance for Bernard, which included clips from 4 Bollywood songs.  I'll give the link for the video of the dance when it's posted, but for now here's some photos of the evening!

Uttarayan

Not only did my sister get to come, but my parents arrived on New Year's Eve and stayed til January 14th.  I'll post photos from our many adventures later, but first I'm going to post photos from the last day they were here. They got to experience one of the best festivals of the year, Uttarayan, which is a kite festival.  People start flying their kites to practice a week or more before the actual 2 days of Uttarayan.  The actual 2 days are amazing!  They have competitions and it's really a neat sight to see.  If you have ever seen the movie, Kite Runner, it's exactly like that.  Everyone tries to cut down each other's kites and whenever you get a cut, you scream and yell.  At night, they attach lanterns to the kite string so all through the city you can see little lights glowing in the sky.
Day One : We spent the first day with our good friends, Abhishek and Sweeti and their family.  They prepared a special kite day meal, which was quite tasty.
Day Two: Bernard and I went to his friend, Abhilash's house and then that night Anna and I went to our friend, Chaitri's house.
I was really happy my parents were able to be here for this festival.  We had a lot of fun and were taught how to fly the kites.  I even, made a cut, accidentally, but I did it!

Christmas Season

I was so blessed to be able to have my sister here during Christmas.  She helped out with all our Christmas gatherings and was able to meet all our friends.  We had a different program almost every night beginning from the day she arrived on the 18th to the 26th.  We were really busy but it was an amazing Christmas!  Click on the links below to see photos from each event.

We are involved in a cultural exchange class at one of the universities here, so we had an
interesting gathering.  We wore traditional dress, ate food from 3 different countries,
and learned music and dance from 4 different countries.  Kristen sang a song, we ate some
Christmas cake, and shared the true story of Christmas.
Scope Christmas Party

The second gathering we had was at our home.  We invited everyone we knew to
come celebrate with us.  We all met new people and had a wonderful evening.
We also did some more dancing, which is always fun.
Christmas Party #2

The next night we went caroling.  This might have been the funnest night!  We went to 4 of our friends' houses around the city.  I think our friends really enjoyed it; they all tried to sing along!
We wish you a Merry Christmas

The next night we had a lovely evening with some of friends with families. Our language helpers and good friends and their families came, along with 2 other wonderful families.  We had spaghetti for dinner to introduce a new food to our friends here.  We also played the White Elephant game, which was truly entertaining!

Sister!

My sister came to visit mid-December.  I was so happy that she was able to come visit.  We actually lost her for awhile, though.  We went to pick her up from the airport at 9 am and she wasn't there! One of her flights was delayed and then due to a ridiculous term that SpiceJet came up with called "preponing" she missed her flight to my city.

But she ended up meeting some great friends at the airport and they were able to let me know she was waiting at the airport.  We were finally united at 4 that afternoon!

Even though it was almost a month ago now, my birthday was October 30th! Some friends and I went to a city up in the mountains.  It was actually cold at night (had to where long sleeves and a jacket cold)!  The days were still warm, but the combination was nice.  A beautiful, clean river flowed by the place we were staying.  Waterfalls are one of my favorite things, so on my actual birthday we went to see one that was about 40 minutes from where we were staying.  The next day a few of us went on a safari on an elephant to look for a tiger.  We definitely got very near it.  Even though we didn't see it, we did hear, and our
elephant knew it was somewhere near, because it
got a bit scared!

More Festival Videos

The tradition is that one of the goddesses was in a battle which lasted for 9 days. The enemy would only come out at night, so for the 9 days, people would dance during the night to give the goddess energy.

12:30 A.M.

After the 9 nights, the enemy, Ravana was defeated.

This culture loves their festivals!

This week's festival is called Navratri. It's a festival that lasts for 9 days, and dedicated to a god Mataji. This festival is all about dancing; they even have special outfits for the occasion. There will definitely be more photos to come, but this is what is currently happening at my apartment...

and this is what it sounds like for approximately 3 hours beginning at 9:30 p.m. and going til 12:30 a.m....every night...for 9 nights.

Sketches

Katie, our friend Simone, and I went to an art exhibit at a nearby college this past weekend. It was rather interesting. The artist called the show "Sketches." It was a series of paintings all related to things seen in this country, such as a garland maker, vegetable wala, man sleeping on his cart...basically things that anyone can see on a daily basis. I thought the paintings, if just one was by itself, wouldn't be that visually appealing, but all of them together made for a nice exhibit of colors and thought.

This "sketch" is of a mat weaver
